Introduction to Sheep Shearing

One-day Introductory Sheep Shearing Course. Emphasis on shearing blade selection, machine set-up and trouble-shooting, belly-shearing and crutching.

Tuition: $40, cash or check, pay on day of event (checks payable to Treasurer, VA Tech) *

Each course is limited to 15 participants

Participants are encouraged to bring their own shearing machine and shearing blades. We will have a limited number of machines and blades class participants can use.

Please pre-register by Wednesday February 15 for Wytheville Agenda:
9:00 – 9:30am – registration, meet & greet
9:30 – 11:00am – blade selection and machine set-up
11am – 12:30pm – demonstration and participants shearing the belly wool and crutch
Lunch
1:15pm – 3pm – continue practice shearing the belly and crutch
After everyone has done belly and crutch shearing, participants are welcome to stay to try full-pattern shearing to remove the entire fleece. Tom Stanley will stay past 3pm for those participants that wish to gain some experience with full pattern shearing.

Notice to Participants:
Sheep shearing is physically demanding and requires bending and lifting the equivalent of 50 lbs. or more.  Participants take part in this training at their own risk. It is recommended participants engage in, at a minimum, gentle stretching daily leading up to this introductory class. People with chronic spinal pain or injury are strongly discouraged from participating in the live animal handling portion of this school.
